The airport covers 1,200 acres (4.9 km²) and has three runways. Its IATA airport code, SDF, is based on the Louisville Standiford Field Airport’s former name was Standiford Field.

The Louisville Standiford Field Airport is the seventh busiest in the world by cargo traffic. Although it currently does not have regularly-scheduled international passenger flights, it is a port of entry, as it handles numerous international cargo flights.
